Men's embroidered shirt from the “Embroidered Ukraine” collection

The ornament on this embroidered shirt, created from a 19th-century exhibit, belongs to the collection of the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art in Kyiv. The embroidery comes from the village of Voloske in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The upper parts of the sleeves (or poliki) of this shirt are embroidered with red and black threads. The shirt is decorated with a geometric ribbon pattern in several transverse rows.

Three plant-geometric “trees” or “broken branches” are embroidered on the sleeves of the shirt – further up the Dnipro River, they were also called “maples.” Between the branches, there are also three vertical stripes with images of svargi or svastika – symbols of the sun and happiness.
