This documentary book by the writer and reporter Vira Kuryko is a literary account of ordinary Soviet people (neighbours, friends, colleagues, and new acquaintances) whom the system exploited to secure the re-conviction of the dissident Levko Lukyanenko whilst he was living with his first wife in Chernihiv. Who are they, and do they recall their seemingly unremarkable actions and words?

Are the people who contributed to the imprisonment of dissident Levko Lukyanenko prepared today to accept new conditions just as they accepted the previous ones, and to live in a city where one of the most important streets might be named after a man whom the Soviet authorities feared so much and whose destruction they enlisted everyone who did not resist to help bring about?
