Everything truly important to Ukraine has been earned through hard work, effort, and struggle. Language, writing, symbols, traditions, culture, land, and freedom have been won by generations of courageous people.
Their solidarity and ability to stand together led Ukraine to independence, celebrated in 1991 with three raised fingers — the “Chornovil trident.” Although the gesture dates back to the era of the Sich Riflemen and the underground movement, it was Viacheslav Chornovil who established it as a symbol of national identity and the fight for independence.
This very trident is depicted at the center of the print. Like the national coat of arms, it is our legacy. The blue-and-yellow flag running through the composition symbolizes the thread of freedom Ukrainians have never let go of.
